Established on March 15, 1989, the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for providing Federal benefits to Veterans and their families. The VA is headed by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and is the second largest of the 15 Cabinet departments operating nationwide programs for health care financial assistance and burial benefits.

Minimum Duty Requirements
Veterans who enlisted after September 7, 1980 or entered active duty after October 16, 1981 must have served 24 continuous months or the full period for which they were called to active duty in order to be eligible. This minimum may not apply to Veterans discharged for hardship, early out or a disability incurred or aggravated in the line of duty.
